outunderstanding. thank you all for your service. this is remarkable to have you here. it's my first time here with the fox family, and it feels like home. you have given so much to this country. 10 years active service, and you continue to do tours with the uso for -- i think you have done 10 separate tours over the past 10 years. >> over 10 tours to either and/or iraq and afghanistan. >> so you continue to give and definitely in the christmas spirit. i see all the kids in there. you guys are ready for christmas, right? i see your smiles. tell us what christmas and this song means to you. >> for me, christmas is really about a chance to give back and to show our appreciation. ultimately, i'm one to confess my faith. i know that christ came and died on the cross so that i would be forgiven for my sins. no greater gift. >> no greater gift. >> and you know we do our best to emulate that. i think that's a wonderful thing about these men and women and i speak for the families too. they make such great

largest christian churches. pastor rick warren is here with a special christmas message that all of america is going to want to hear. merry christmas, pastor. >> member dr. christmas steve. merry christmas america. people often ask me what the purpose of christmas. purpose of christmas are found in the three statements that the angels made at the very first christmas. they said i bring you good news of great joy. for unto you you is born this day a savior peace on earth, goodwill toward men. celebration, salvation, and reconciliation. so this christmas i would encourage everybody to do these three things. first have a party. christmas is a celebration. >> i'm ready for that. >> i bring you good news of great joy by the way it says for all people. not just for christians. it's for all people. second it's salvation. i give you a savior in the city of david. what do we need saving from? well, a lot of things. from ourselves, from our past, from our grief, from our guilt in from our grudges. and so if we didn't need a savior, god wouldn't have sent one. and then third he says peace on earth goodwill

toward men. that's all about reconciliation. a the lo of times when people get together at christmas, there are a lot of old feelings of families and difficulties that are -- it's a good time for reconciliation. by the way since it's peace on earth and goodwill toward men. i would like to thank the men and women in uniform. all of those serving in armed services on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for helping us have peace on earth this christmas. >> very nice. >> we love you all. >> we do indeed. you know, i love your message. a purpose driven christmas essentially is what you are talking about. >> exactly. >> you are missing out on something. >> yeah. >> you didn't mention the gifts. for some people it's all about the stuff. >> the idea of gifts, the whole reason give gifts at christmas is because the wise men brought gifts to jesus in the very first christmas. so now we give gifts to each other. here is an interesting thing. can you imagine going to birthday party where everybody gives gifts to each other except to the birthday boy. my question to you in america this christmas is what gift are you going to

now they are both francis. so, i mean -- >> -- so they are even more one in the same for families like yours. >> yeah. >> what are some of your italian traditions? >> well, of course, midnight mass, having the nativity scene up on christmas eve. you put the christ child in there. you wait until christmas eve for that and then there is a big tradition called the feast of the seven fissures that you do on christmas eve. you make a bunch of these fissures. my -- fishes. three of which i probably ate. the rest i couldn't go near. they were interesting. all great stuff. i think and then the midnight mass. >> i know your dad played a big part in your life, too. you have a special connection through the military, through your father? >> well, my dad and his father as well was italian immigrant who was in the u.s. infantry, got two purple hearts and oak leaf cluster. my dad is was a gunner. torpedoed in world war ii and in the water for three days. every fourth of july,

. a california judge ruling a brain dead teen can be taken off life support. the 13-year-old was bleeding profusely and went into cardiac arrest after aof aafter a tonsillectomy. the judge is giving the family up december 30 to file an appeal. she will remain on life support until then. this hour i'm kelly wright. back to "fox & friends" christmas. ♪ ♪ >> welcome back and merry christmas, we are so glad that you you can join us.

of honor vice president. is he joined by his wife karen and their two incredible daughters katelyn and mckenziely. both folds of honor recipients. thank you for being here y'all. this is incredible to have you. your stories are exceptional. major, i want to start with you, folds of honor is something that came to you and you felt more than motivated to start it. what's the mission of folds of honor for those who may not know and how did it come about? >> well, our mission is to leave no family behind elizabeth. we provide scholarships to spouses of kids who have had someone killed or disabled in afghanistan. we have over a thousand recipients as we get ready to celebrate christmas. so many of our military out in the audience here and that was really the motivation as f-16 pilot. three tours of duty in. understand freedom isn't free. once people give life and limb. i felt the calling from god to do something in my life about it and didn't do anything. and until a fateful commercial airline flight of all places from grand

rapids, it was actually flying from chicago o'hare to grand rapids michigan and get on this flight unbeknownst to me we land in grand rapids after midnight and pilot came online and said had an american on board. buck land and twin brother had brought him those 7,000 miles home that night i watched the other side of war. the bucklands on the darkest side of his lives. parents and 4-year-old son sat at the cargo rasp and welcomed him home for the last time. it was one of the most emotional things i had ever witnessed in my life. that was the moment that got called me to do something and thankfully we had the courage to take some action. >> you have continued your service folds of honor is exceptional. the outreach is continuing. major polito your story is one of pure gift, service, resilience, and now you found folds of honor and

major rooney, walk us through the beginning, 2004 take us back. >> well i always told everyone that my life is about god country, family, and the enlisted and noncommissioned officer, the backbone of our military. as an officer, that's who saved my life on that day on august 17th, 2004, improvised explosive device room that would change my life forever. first fragment broke my knee and broke it in three places. fragments in the left side of my body. arrived in baghdad, 17 hours of surgery. blood transfusions. i say i have a little female blood in me because now i cry all the tile. it was very important and i would head to germany and germany medical center where i would be renoon nighted with my family. on october 1st of 2004, i prayed to god, my mom was there, my wife held my hand and we made a decision to amputate my left leg. best thing that ever happened to me. but it vietnam americans

said the mistakes made on us will not be made on you. god bless the united states of america. >> amen to that. [ applause ] >> major rooney gave me a chance to serve the enlisted and noncommissioned officer and other fellow officers to give scholarships to the families of fallen and wounded. i sthank my wife and my two girls for being there every step of the way and major rooney for knowing and understanding as grand founders we cannot leave each other behind. >> we will give that a second amen. >> karen, i see you. i'm sure every time you hear that story it's not like you get used to or numb to it folds of honor stepped in and know what families need and how to be a family to families in the military. how has it changed your life? >> they give that you security back. you don't have to worry about your children. that is just one load lifted from me not to worry about

their future. the scholarship is in place. and just one thing you don't have to worry about. and because there are a lot of worries that go along with a situation like this. it's given my husband a whole new purpose. he is a driven man. most of the time you forget he has got a handicap because we are running behind him at the airport trying to keep up with him. it really has changed our lives for the better and god's handprint was all over all of this whole situation. >> a blessing for sure. >> katelyn and kinsly, i see you smiling over there you have an exceptional situation here. how do you feel about folds of honor and your dad and your mom? >> i think it's a great foundation. it does so much for the military families that have lost someone or somebody has been wounded. >> constituencily, i love

mckenziely. i love your smile. it to be scary to know this is happening to your dad and what a blessing and joy you must feel to see him racing ahead of you now at the airport, right? is it true you can't keep up with him? well, i think that there are so many kids out there and in our audience who have stories that are very similar they share your heart. what do you say to kids out there in the military to their friends maybe, who just want to understand what it is like in the sacrifice that your families really do make and we are thankful for it. what do you say to them? >> well it's like all of us it's great that daddy sacrificed and i just really love everybody. >> you have big hearts in this family, major. >> we will say major hearts in the major's family.

22-year-old and 72-year-old may seem like an unusual pair but ask anyone who knows them and they are definitely a package deal.

joining me now with their amazing story of kindness and faith collin smith and earnest green. this is really one of the most remarkable amazing stories i have heard in a long time. collin, you were gravely injured, paralyzed in a car accident at 14 not long after earnest came into your life. tell us how that happened. >> well, i was first time i met him was in rehab hospital. and i knew his face but i didn't know who he was. so i woke up one morning and this 6'2", 6'3" man is staring at me. i'm like wow, what's going on here? and he was there learning how to take care of me and do things for me. >> so earnest, you have had a long career you have a family of your own two children. what moved to you want to devote some much of your life to someone you had never met. >> i think pretty much all of my life my main enjoyment has come from being able to help us. collin is the latest of a number of kids through the

years that i have done special things with. but, i just have a feeling for people that need some help. >> does that come from your faith. >> it comes from my faith. i think that's what christianity teaches you. >> tell us about what your relationship is like, the practical element of it. you just recently graduated from high point university in carolina. you helped get collin to class every day. >> every day. >> tell us what that meant. >> it meant that i had to be up early every morning. >> how early? >> i got up at 4:30 every morning. and i was at his house about 6:00 every morning. and got him ready got him up and showered and dressed and breakfast and school, and class, and whatever else came along during the day and sometimes we was at late as 7:00 or 8:00 at night getting home. >> that is such an intimate

relationship. you are with one another from the second you wake up until late at night. that is more time than most married people spend together. how deep has your relationship become after all of this time? >> it's hard to describe. i mean the only reason that you can really see what it is if you have time away. and we have had a couple months away and i really got to think and see, actually what he does for me. there is really no way to describe it. >> oh. christian group is going to make a movie or is in the process of putting a movie about y'all your relationship called package deal. what do you think of that? >> our initial reaction was no way. i'm not out to promote myself and so i wasn't interested. when i found out that it was being done by people that were strong christians and that they are aim was to

portray someone doing kindness and someone sacrificing and that type of thing, i just felt like that was something that would speak to people that we come to see the movie. >> your story is already inspiring people. thank you both very much. collin smith, earnest green. >> priest came from nowhere to pray with an accident victim at the scene of a head on car crash. is he no longer a mystery. he is here along with a woman he helped save. >> that's right. he wowed his crowd with performance of god bless america world series. navy petty officer generald wilson brings his voice to our christian celebration. >> if you are like a lot of investors this past year you probably made a lot of money in the markets. if you weren't in the markets, i hope you were happy none the less. if you were in the markets and you are happy as well, well, you have hit a home run. regardless, hang on to what's important and what's priceless. all those folks right around

he is about to do it again, welcome, this is an incredible honor and treat for us to have you here, i want to know, how did you end up singing at the world series? >> well i've been singing professional games and major league baseball just caught on i guess back in 2011, doing two world series. >> and they brought you back. you know, many times you hear singers and realize what a great voice. and sometimes you hear somebody sing and you understand the lyrics. and that is what happened when you sang this. and i get a feeling that you have a sense of the flag in a way that you can tell us something that we can learn from that. >> of course, of course being in the military you know exactly what this uniform stands for, a and what we stand for for this country. so it is a lot of people that just live, just to be living. but to understand what the -- the reason for being here, the freedoms that we have. just the different things

actually people fighting for this country is a big deal to those men and women that wear this uniform. >> and the understanding of that came through when you sang that. how has the military changed your life? >> well, it was the military or i guess, staying at home with mom, you know? mom or dad. i really was not a college guy, i really didn't like school, so i had to go to the military. and the military, of course trains you to study. because that is how you advance. so that is where i got my studying from the military. and 21 years later i work for the v.a. now, so it is an honor to be there. >> and then you have this side thing where you sing, you can sing. >> well thank you praise god. >> you can sing well, this is the moment we've all been waiting for. he is going to perform "silent night" take it away. silent night holy night ♪

it is all about a baby. now, a lot of people listening now know the transformation a baby can make in your life, it literally changes everything. the man becomes a father the woman becomes a mother, the center of your life is focused on the baby. that is what god the father intended when he said that jesus christ is a baby. when you think about it steve, a baby is at the center of history. everything in history is dated from the birth of that baby, before christ and after christ. and that baby is intended to be the center of our lives. that is the christmas message. and as the arrival of a new baby is almost an affirmation from god that life, that that family is meant to go on that is what god the father says when he sends his only son. >> babies also, they have their whole lives ahead of them even though we're at the end of the year it is the start of something. >> as catholics we start the year with the first sunday the

four weeks preparing for christmas, so christmas always does bring renewal, a renewal of hope and promise. christmas morning, i can remember steve looking at my mom and dad. my dad worked hard we didn't have much. but i can remember my mom and dad just with a sense of peace and enjoyment, looking at their five kids. and it just gives hope. you know the story of how date-wise, christmas, the birth of the son comes very near to the rebirth of the sun when the sun is at its lowest and begins to be reborn with the winter solstice. that is when we celebrate the birth of the son of god. winter does not have a last word, spring and summer do. life conquers death, that is the meaning of christmas. >> that is lovely. how -- when you watch television, you see all the commercials about get this stuff for everybody in your family. you got to have a lot of stuff.

stuff is good. but at the same time, it's about the stuff in here. it is not the substance, i kind of like some of the stuff, too, i like turkey stuffing. so anyway, there is a lot of good stuff out there and sometimes i'm tempted to get down with all of this flurry of buying and consumerism. but i think you know what? these people out shopping are buying stuff to give to others so that sharing being generous owe -- >> their heart is in the right place, too. >> but we do, and this is where our buddy, hope francis, comes in. he reminds us that the temptation of getting and buying and hoarding and accumulating is that we begin to pin our worth on what we can buy and accumulate. and he says now we can't do that. because he says our real worth, value, importance comes from who we are. >> you mentioned pope francis, is it just my imagination, it

seems like this christmas -- i'm catholic. people seem to be a little more excited -- >> he is a genuine christmas gift, pope francis is he has the world's attention. i can't walk down the beautiful streets of new york and people stopping me saying hey, we love him, you did a good job i'm not even a catholic, but i like this guy. there is a sincerity a warmth that really captures people. it is a christmas gift. and you know the day after christmas, the feast of st. steven. >> happy feast day, a day in advance. >> you should give a present on the 26th as well. >> the day after christmas my wife was going to have me take some stuff back to bloomingdales. >> well, stop by st. patricks. >> have a blessed christmas.

>> and you also. >> and looking at these pictures it is hard to believe the driver of the car made it out alive and she did. but that is because in part her complete stranger, the angel, kept her alive. welcome to you both. >> thank you. >> merry christmas, it will be indeed. >> happy christmas yes. >> and your story, everyone was talking about it. and katey, that day, was it august 4th? >> yes. >> can you tell me what happened? >> i was driving from illinois to jefferson city. i was planning on going to church that morning and was about three miles away from center, missouri, when a car pulled into my lane. it was a head-on collision. and at first, i didn't know what happened. but when the cars behind me -- people had come up to me and i asked if this really happening? what happened? and they told me that indeed i was trapped in my car and that they had called 911.

>> your car was flipped? >> yes, it flipped officials believe it landed and rolled on its side. >> you were flipped, what did you ask for? >> i asked them to pray for me and to call my mom. >> which they did, did they pray for you? >> yes they did i asked them to pray out loud for me the pain, and the rescuers to come quickly. >> well, your angel must have heard, because father you are driving by and you see the accident, right? >> i see the car laying there for quite a distance. and i stopped in the line of cars. so i just knew there was something wrong ahead. and then when they began to divert the traffic to go back around the detour, i drove off -- >> so many were detouring you didn't take the detour --

>> i asked for permission to approach to annoint, priests ask -- that is what priests do, every priest does this. they don't pass by an accident that is what they do in hospitals, they pray for people who are sick. >> when you approached katey, you had your mom on the phone, she said you were on the phone praying out loud. father came up then begins to pray with you as well? >> yes. >> and annoints you. you get out of the car you were rehabbing, i understand. august 4th your birthday is when? >> september 20th. >> so katey has her birthday party, who shows up? >> the father. >> the interesting thing, though, had had you seen him? >> i had seen him the week after the accident, i was in icu, it was a very short visit. i do remember it. it is one of the few things i remember from icu.

i was so thankful we got to meet. on my 20th birthday, we really got to talk about that day. and it was so special. >> father you didn't want credit or to come forward. >> well i don't watch television much. i am a little too busy. and i am -- a week went by. and one of the priests told me, they're looking for you. i told one of the priests -- >> you're a wanted man. >> he said they're looking for you, you better come forward. so then, i did contact katey's mother and tell her who it was. and then, it grew from there. >> your mom told me that when you walked in you heard father's voice. what went through your mind? >> i recognized it immediately. with the way the car was positioned, i couldn't see anyone unless they physically got in the car with me. i heard father praying for me at the scene of the accident.

really looked out for me for a long time. >> you guys look like you have a great relationship. and what do you like to do during the holiday season? do you and your family have any special traditions? >> yeah, i actually just hang out with my family. we veg all day. it is like a nice couch day for all of us. right now it is really special to me because i'm on the road a lot, especially for the past few years. so every christmas i know i'm going home, just going to be relax and be with my family and friends. and yeah it is just nice to see everyone. >> and you like to open some of your christmas gifts early? >> yeah, i used to go and rip all of my presents that my mum would put under the tree, make little tears and see what it was. and then i would angle it so my mom couldn't see, but then when it came to christmas day, the whole backs of the presents were open. so she let us open the presents on christmas eve. and that is kind of the tradition that we kept. >> beautiful tradition.
